Akif Kariman is Program Director at Roma for Democracy and leads the Strengthen pillar. He is responsible for durable Roma constituencies and leadership pathways across electoral cycles, connecting year-round organising, promising public voices, future officeholders, and shared priorities that become democratic demands.
Before joining RFD, Akif was active in Roma’s Voice in North Macedonia and co-founded AVAJA, where he led grassroots organising. From 2019 to 2023, he was a fellow of the Open Society Roma Initiatives Office, working with organisers, activists, and emerging leaders. This established a field-rooted approach in which mobilisation builds political capacity beyond a single election.
Akif studied medicine at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. He completed training in organising, political campaigning, leadership, and public engagement through programmes connected to Harvard Kennedy School, Columbia University, Hertie School, and regional institutions.
At RFD, Akif connects political information, leadership development, constituency organising, and public dialogue. His work helps Roma voters act collectively, prepares leaders to represent shared priorities, and carries demands defined by Roma into public debate and institutional decision-making.
